The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has warned of three days of rainfall and thunderstorms across several states from Monday to Wednesday.

In its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet said the conditions could cause flash floods in some places and urged residents and authorities to take precautions.

According to the forecast, the northern region will experience cloudy skies with sunshine intervals on Monday, alongside isolated thunderstorms and light rains in Taraba and Adamawa during the morning. Later in the day, storms with light rains are expected in Kaduna, Gombe, Kebbi, Zamfara, Adamawa, Bauchi, southern Borno, and Taraba.

For the central region, NiMet predicted a cloudy atmosphere with sunshine intervals, noting “there are prospects of thunderstorms with light rain over parts of Nasarawa, Federal Capital Territory, Niger and Nasarawa state during the morning hours.” It added that isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains are likely in most areas later in the afternoon and evening.

The southern region is also expected to face heavy rainfall. NiMet said thunderstorms and light rains would hit Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Lagos, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom in the morning, while stronger rains and thunderstorms are forecast for most of the region by evening.

The outlook for Tuesday and Wednesday remains similar, with thunderstorms and light to moderate rains expected across northern, central, and southern states, including Kaduna, Bauchi, Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Enugu, Akwa Ibom and Rivers.

NiMet specifically warned of flash floods in Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom and Rivers States, calling on local authorities to activate emergency response plans.

“To avoid leaching nutrients, farmers should refrain from applying fertilizer and pesticides right before the rains. Ensure that loose objects are fastened to avoid collision. Disconnect electrical appliances from electrical sockets. Stay away from tall trees to avoid impact from falling branches and broken trees,” the agency advised.

Airline operators were also told to seek airport-specific weather reports for proper planning.

NiMet encouraged residents to keep updated by following its official weather information channels, especially during the three-day forecast period.
