NiMet predicts three days of thunderstorms, rain nationwide

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has forecast three days of thunderstorms and rainfall from Saturday to Monday in many parts of the country.

In its weather outlook released on Friday in Abuja, NiMet said there will be early morning thunderstorms on Saturday in some northern states such as Taraba, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Adamawa.

It also said that later in the day, more thunderstorms with rain will likely occur in Kebbi, Taraba, Zamfara, Borno, Sokoto, Gombe, and Bauchi.

For the North-Central region, NiMet expects morning thunderstorms in Benue, Plateau, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory, and Nasarawa. By afternoon and evening, rain and thunder are also expected in Kwara and Kogi.

In the southern region, NiMet said there will be a cloudy atmosphere with morning rains likely in Enugu, Ebonyi, Cross River, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Bayelsa. Later in the day, most parts of the South including Imo, Abia, Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti, Edo, and Delta are expected to experience thunderstorms and rainfall.

On Sunday, the weather pattern will continue with morning thunderstorms in parts of Kaduna, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba. Later in the day, rain is expected to spread to Zamfara, Gombe, and Bauchi.

For North-Central states like Kogi, Kwara, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, and the FCT, NiMet said there will be clouds with some sunshine and chances of thunderstorms later in the day.

In the South, morning rain is expected in Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River. By evening, thunderstorms and rain are likely across most of the region.

On Monday, NiMet forecast early morning thunderstorms in Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba. This will be followed by rain later in the day in Kano, Katsina, Gombe, and Bauchi.

Cloudy weather with sunshine is expected in North-Central states, with more thunderstorms and rain likely in the afternoon in Kwara, Plateau, and Kogi.

In the southern region, morning rain is expected in Ogun, Edo, Ondo, Delta, and Bayelsa, followed by widespread thunderstorms later in the day.

NiMet warned the public to be careful, as strong winds may come before the rain in some areas.

“People should secure loose objects to prevent accidents. Avoid driving under heavy rain and disconnect electrical appliances to stay safe,” the agency said.

It also advised airline operators to get weather reports for better flight planning.
