The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has announced a three-day forecast predicting sunshine, haziness, and moderate dust haze across Nigeria from Thursday to Saturday.
In a weather report released on Wednesday, NiMet urged the public to take precautions as dust particles in the air may affect visibility and health, especially for people with asthma or respiratory conditions.
For Thursday, NiMet expects a mix of sunshine and haziness in northern states like Borno, Adamawa, and Taraba, with dust haze likely to lower visibility to between 2 to 5 kilometers in most northern areas.
The North Central region will also experience moderate dust haze, with visibility reduced to around 2 to 5 kilometers. In the south, inland states will have sunny and hazy weather, while the coastal areas may see sunny skies with clouds in the morning, followed by local thunderstorms and moderate rain in the afternoon or evening, particularly in states like Lagos, Ogun, and Bayelsa.
NiMet’s Friday forecast includes more dust haze for the northern and North Central regions, with some areas seeing visibility as low as 1 kilometer. In southern Nigeria, inland areas will continue to see sunny and hazy conditions, while coastal regions may face thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening in states like Imo, Anambra, Rivers, and Delta.
On Saturday, NiMet expects continued dust haze in the north, with visibility likely to stay between 2 and 5 kilometers. The North Central region will also have moderate dust haze, while southern areas may experience a sunny and hazy atmosphere inland, and cloudy skies along the coast.
NiMet advised, “People with asthma and other respiratory conditions should be cautious of the weather.” It also recommended that airline operators obtain specific weather reports for safe operations. “Strong winds may precede rain in areas with thunderstorms, so residents should follow safety advisories.”
