The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has predicted heavy rainfall that could lead to flash floods in coastal cities between May and June 2025.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced this on Tuesday in Abuja while presenting the annual climate prediction for 2025.

Keyamo explained that the rainy season would start late in some northern and central states, including Plateau, Kaduna, Niger, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, Adamawa, and Kwara. However, states like Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Anambra, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Enugu, Imo, and Ebonyi would experience early rainfall.

“The rest of the country is expected to have normal rainfall onset,” he said.

NiMET also predicted that the rainy season would end earlier than usual in states like Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, Plateau, Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, FCT, Ekiti, and Ondo. On the other hand, the season may last longer in Kaduna, Nasarawa, Benue, Lagos, Kwara, Taraba, Oyo, Ogun, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Anambra, and Enugu.

Temperatures across the country are also expected to be higher than usual, especially in January, February, March, and May. However, April is predicted to be slightly cooler in some areas, while most northern states will remain warmer than normal.

Keyamo urged farmers and others who depend on rainfall for their activities to check the Seasonal Climate Change document or contact NiMET for more details.
