NIHSA warns of rising River Benue water levels
The Nigeria Hydrological Service Agency has issued a warning about the rapidly rising water levels in the River Benue, which have reached dangerous levels over the past few days, signaling a high risk of flooding in states along the river.
In a statement released on Sunday, NIHSA revealed that water levels have been steadily increasing since Thursday, September 19, 2024. The agency said, “The water levels at our critical stations along Benue Basin as of Thursday 19th September 2024, show a steady and normal rise.”
The water levels continued to rise on Friday, September 20, 2024, nearing flood preparedness levels. The agency stated, “The water levels at our critical stations along River Benue Basin as of Friday 20th September are at flood preparedness level.”
By Saturday, September 21, 2024, the situation worsened as the water levels approached flood levels. NIHSA warned, “The water levels at the nation’s critical stations along the River Benue showed a steady increase towards flood levels.”
The agency advised the 12 flood-prone states along the river to take immediate action to prevent severe flooding. “We appeal to Nigerians to clear their canals, drainages, and gutters to mitigate floods,” NIHSA urged, calling for proactive efforts to reduce the risk.
NIHSA’s warning highlights the urgent need for states and local governments to implement preventive measures to reduce the impact of potential floods in the affected areas.
