Nigeria is experiencing darkness again as the National Grid collapsed on Monday evening.

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the collapse in a statement.

The power supply was interrupted around 6:50 PM. This incident follows previous collapses, including one in August and another in July 2024.

According to the spokesperson, Emeka Ezeh, the collapse occurred at 6:48 PM.

Ezeh stated, “The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC wishes to inform her esteemed customers of a general system collapse that occurred at 18:48 hours today, 14th October 2024. This has resulted in the loss of supply currently being experienced across the EEDC network.”

He added that the collapse affected all power supply in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States. “Consequently, due to this development, all our interface TCN stations are out of supply, and we are unable to provide services to our customers,” he said. The EEDC is waiting for more information about the collapse and plans for restoration from the National Control Centre in Osogbo.

Eko Distribution Company also confirmed the grid collapse. They wrote, “Dear Valued Customer, kindly be informed there was a system collapse at 18:48 hrs which has resulted in a loss of power supply across our network. We are currently working with our partners as we hope for speedy restoration of the grid. We will keep you updated as soon as power supply is restored. Kindly bear with us.”

Data from the Transmission Company of Nigeria shows that the national grid has collapsed about 227 times in the last 14 years.

This blackout comes amid a 240 percent increase in electricity tariffs in April, adding to the challenges that many Nigerians are facing.
