Many Nigerians are spending increasing amounts on beer to ease frustration and cope with stress caused by harsh economic conditions, according to a survey by The PUNCH.

Despite shrinking incomes and rising costs, consumers say a few bottles of beer help them calm down and strategise better.

Interviews with beer consumers across Lagos and Ogun states reveal that alcohol has become a coping mechanism for stress, unemployment, and uncertainty. “I use alcohol to cure sadness and depression,” said Adeyemi Quadri, an unemployed graduate.

A corporate worker, Sola Ajisafe, explained, “After a tedious day at work, with uncertainty of bills waiting at home, I dash to a bar to take some bottles. It helps me evaluate the day and plan ahead.”

Many have reduced their consumption due to high prices. A bottle of beer now costs between ₦1,000 and ₦2,500, up from around ₦250 in previous years. Traders like Ifeanyi Charles said they now limit themselves to three or four bottles and sometimes switch to cheaper sachet drinks known as ‘fenuja’.

Data shows Nigerians spent heavily on beer in 2025. Three major brewing companies—Nigerian Breweries Plc, International Breweries Plc, and Champion Breweries Plc—generated a combined revenue of over ₦1.54 trillion in the first nine months of the year.

Despite the economic strain, many see beer as one of the few affordable comforts left. “For me, it’s just a way to calm down,” said Gbenga Ogunsanya, while Alex Olalekan added, “I drink beer just to get away from worries.”

While some reported mild side effects like migraines, most downplayed health concerns, prioritising temporary relief from daily pressures.
