Nigerians react as another Chibok schoolgirl regains freedom
On Saturday, the Nigerian troops announced that they have been able to rescue another one of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls. The girl was one of the more than 200 kidnapped by Boko Haram extremists more than two years ago. The troops in a pre-dawn raid Saturday rescued the girl from a forest hideout of the extremist.
She had a 10-month-old baby boy born to a Boko Haram fighter, a statement from army spokesman Col. Sani Kukasheka Usman revealed.
The girl was identified as Maryam Ali Maiyanga, one of the prefects in the school then.
“She is from Askira Uba and was abducted along with her twin, Halima Ali (Number 197), who is yet to return,” a statement on Saturday by the spokesperson of the group, Sesugh Akume, read.
It was the first army rescue of a Chibok girl. Last month, Nigeria’s government secured the freedom of 21 of the Chibok schoolgirls in the first such release negotiated with Boko Haram. Another girl escaped in May on her own.
Thousands of other Boko Haram captives have been freed this year as the military has forced the extremists out of towns and villages in northeastern Nigeria, where they had declared an Islamic caliphate. But until Saturday, none proved to be among the 276 schoolgirls seized from northeastern Chibok town in April 2014.
Nigerians received the news with mixed feeling while many people including president Muhammadu Buhari expressed happiness, some other people still hold that it is a scam. Here are some of the reactions.
