Nigerian singers should address societal problems- Stella Monye

Veteran Nigerian singer, Stella Monye, has asked fast-rising music stars to release more intentional songs that address the ills in the society and country.

Monye made this known in an exclusive interview with The Nation.

According to Monye, Nigerian musicians delving into the matters in society through their music is equal to fighting for their human rights.

“The only thing they didn’t do that I think they should do more is talk about the society because things are not really going right in Nigeria now and people like Fela, Sonny Okosun, they fought for human rights and we are looking forward to really having them from this generation to do the same even fight more but nobody, everybody is just doing leisure thing you know it’s okay,” she said.

Comparing this current generation of artists and that of her time, the ‘Sallie Girl’ singer said they can’t be compared as the artistes of today are more focused on trends while her generation was focused on passing a message across.

“They are two different generations and I always say when people say oh! they are singing rubbish, I don’t want to agree that they are singing rubbish.

“I want to say it is the trend, as we go the trend goes with it and you can’t say completely that they are all singing rubbish.

“I mean people like Tubaba, Psquare, Kizz Daniel, you know, they are doing fantastic also I like Mayorkun’s music, I like Davido, you know, a whole lot of them are doing good.

“So there are no two ways, you cannot write them off completely, it’s not possible, what we did in our generation is different, what they are doing is different and it’s not really different like that you understand.

We all have messages, in our generation, people sang love songs, in this generation, people are singing love songs, in this same generation people are singing all kinds of things. I mean sometimes when you are too revolutionized, maybe they don’t want to remind people.”
