A Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State, on Wednesday convicted an internet fraudster, Dayo Adeyemi, for duping an American.
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC] had dragged Adeyemi before Justice Peter Lifu for presenting self as a lady with the name Amazing Empire to defraud an American.
The defendant, upon arraignment, had agreed on a plea bargain and Justice Lifu immediately convicted him.
The court later adjourned the matter till June 23 for sentencing and remanded the defendant in Ilesha Correctional Centre.
Meanwhile, one Timileyin Awojobi, who posed as a woman to defraud some American men of a sum of $4, 380 and N512,000 had been dragged before a Federal High Court in Osogbo.
The EFCC prosecutor, AbduRasheed Sulaeman, said the defendant presented self as an American lady from New York that was on a medical mission to Nigeria.
Sulaeman told the court that Awojobi at different times, collected $2980, $1400, N337,000, N175,000 as part payment for her flight back to the United States.
According to him, the crime was contrary to Section 1(1)(a) and punishable under Section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud.
Although he pleaded not guilty to the 15 counts bordering on fraud pressed against him, Awojobi later informed the court of his readiness to opt for a plea bargain.
Justice Peter Lifu, subsequently committed the defendant to bail in the sum of N20m with two sureties.
He then adjourned the matter to June 30, 2020 for the adoption of plea bargain agreement or hearing.
