Nigerians are narrating their experiences with Human Resources officer during job interviews and the comments about them are not encouraging.
WuzupNaija reports that the reactions were prompted by a tweet by a Canada-based Nigerian lady identified as Taiwo (@taiwo__y), who took to her Twitter page on Monday to post how she denied a young man a job with her organisation because he complimented her by saying:
“You smell nice”
The tweet had since generated several backlash from Nigerians who believe there was nothing wrong with the compliment and condemned Taiwo for taking pride in her action.
Following reactions and anger that have continued to trail the tweet, Nigerians have also taken advantage of the moment to narrate their experience with Nigerian HR and also lambaste recruiters over the inhumane treatment they subject job seekers to during job interviews.
A Twitter user, Joyce Amatah (@auntynaira) narrating her experience wrote:
“One interview at waterlines I went for, this one was even the bosses friend that interviewed us. That one rather told us we should step out cause it seems someone was stinking and we should stand far from her
, that day I doubted if my Bsc was useful, I almost got depressed
“She treated us like rags! Like shit! I got home and started asking myself why did I even study too hard to have a 2:1,the main boss called and was telling me to consider her price ,I was jobless but nah I didn’t take that job, same month I got a pretty offer from twitter.”
Another Twitetr user said @Clinton_Vice_B
“All he did was pay her a compliment.. She could have either responded politely or completely ignore. But she rather decided to make him feel less of himself.. Nigerian HR’s be feeling like Assistant God. Smh”
A political and sports writer with Quartz, Yomi Kazeem wrote:
“Nigerian HR folks never miss a chance to play god. Carry the job to heaven. Nonsense upon ingredient.”
See the tweets:
You have opportunity to get a job as HR, you turn yourself to semi god.
When God would disgrace you, your mess do dey everywhere.
A simple compliment does not have any bad effect on you, it wouldn’t make you loose your job, it would not make the guy start having sex with you.

My first interview in the US, I told her I liked her bracelets. She said she got them from Etsy and that she would get me some. 2nd week on the job, she gave me bracelets. See, this interview thing is not judgement day. You Nigerians need to stop tighting your chest https://t.co/XOAXrPaqmk

There’s honestly nothing wrong with paying another human a compliment, interviewer or not.
Nigerian HR is just full of trash humans who feel they’re better than a good number of the work force because they can influence their affairs.— goddess. (@TheDenisiaGrey) March 12, 2019
Only Nigerian HR think you can’t reschedule a job interview because “they are doing you a favour”. Only Nigerian HR think you can’t give a compliment at a job interview because it’s rude. Smh.

Nigerian HR officers will be hiding behind the low self esteem and inferiority complex to treat job seekers like trash but when it is time to do actual HR work, voice mail!

Nigerian HR believes your fate is in their hands
Nigerian Nurses believes your life is in their hands
Nigerian Politicians believes your next four years is in their hands
Nigerian Airlines believes your time is in their hands
Nigerian Parents are never wrong

I was scared before my interview with @FirstBankngr HR in 2014. Turned out they were not our regular Nigerian HR. The lady made sure I was comfortable. “Lovely tie you have there” I shock
I feel only upcoming recruiters would make you feel stupid during an interview.— King of Abuja (@JoeBala) March 12, 2019
The first interview i ever attended was @premierlotto.ng, The head HR Mr Ken said they don’t employ Graduates from unilorin, kwasu, kwara poly, offa poly in short all tertiary institution in kwara that they all speak bad English.
Nigerian HR.. I lost interest right away— sub-dean (@subby_1) March 12, 2019
It’s not only Nigerian HR. In Nigeria, even the employees are rude. You go to the bank, hospital, school or any organization seeking for help or Inquiry and they treat you very rude and angrily like you’re a refugee. You can hardly meet a nice employee in Nigeria Honestly

Again, too many Nigerian HR’s have really poor judgement, too often they focus on the wrong attributes in a job seeker, rather on the ability of the individual to do the job.

I’ve been opportuned to work as a Nigerian HR assistant. I watched as my boss made people feel good with themselves…Both Staff and those we interviewed.
Nigerian HR should change this mentality of being stiff and defensive. A smile won’t crack your face. Be nice!
