The Nigerian Embassy in Iran has facilitated the evacuation of Nigerians who volunteered to leave the country, moving them across the Armenian border, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has disclosed.
Although the commission did not confirm the exact number of evacuees, it stated that no Nigerian has so far been affected by the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
According to a statement issued by the commission, officials of the Nigerian Embassy in Iran organized the evacuation to ensure the safe movement of Nigerians seeking refuge outside the country.
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said: “So far, no Nigerian in Iran has been affected by the war, as government officials remain at the border to receive all who want to leave.”
The development follows growing concerns among some Nigerians residing in Iran after a series of attacks carried out by Israel and the United States on Iranian targets.
Several citizens have since expressed willingness to be evacuated from the country amid the rising tension.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has reiterated the country’s dedication to constructive multilateral cooperation aimed at promoting collective development across the Commonwealth.
In a brief statement issued by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Tuggar delivered the remarks during the 26th Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers’ Meeting held at Lancaster House in London.
According to the statement, the minister joined other foreign ministers from across the Commonwealth to assess major global issues and improve coordination ahead of the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (#CHOGM).
The discussions, Ebienfa noted, “reinforced the importance of collective action in advancing peace, economic resilience, and democratic governance across member states”.
He added: “Nigeria remains committed to constructive multilateral engagement that supports shared progress across the Commonwealth.”
