The Nigerian Air Force has accelerated its efforts to bolster aerial combat capabilities through the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters from the United States.

This was revealed in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, Director of Public Relations and Information for the NAF.

According to the statement, Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, led a high-level delegation to the United States to attend a Programme Management Review Meeting focused on the acquisition. The strategic session was held from June 9 to 13 in San Diego, California, and brought together top officials from the U.S. Government and representatives of Bell Textron, the manufacturer of the AH-1Z Viper.

Following the meeting, Air Marshal Abubakar paid a visit to Camp Pendleton, California, where he toured critical units of the United States Marine Aircraft Group 39. These included the Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367 (HMLA-367) and Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 39 (MALS-39), both of which are tasked with operating and maintaining the AH-1Z platform.

“During the visit, the CAS had the opportunity to inspect the helicopters firsthand and engage with senior officers of the United States Marine Corps on best practices for the operation, sustainment, and logistics support of the AH-1Z platform,” Gabkwet said.

In his remarks, Air Marshal Abubakar expressed appreciation to the U.S. government for its continued strategic partnership with Nigeria. He stated, “The acquisition of the AH-1Z Viper helicopters will significantly enhance the NAF’s combat effectiveness, operational efficiency, and mission readiness.”

The air chief also assured that every effort is being made to expedite the delivery process. “Every necessary step will be taken to facilitate a seamless procurement and integration process. This visit has provided a unique opportunity to understand best practices for the operation, sustainment, and logistical support of the AH-1Z platform from the United States Marine Corps,” he said.

He reiterated the NAF’s commitment to the responsible and strategic deployment of its expanding fleet in confronting internal security challenges. “Our goal is to create enduring peace while protecting innocent lives and property in line with internationally accepted rules of engagement,” he said.

Air Marshal Abubakar also extended gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continuous support of the military and its modernization drive. “The progress made in the AH-1Z acquisition project is a direct reflection of the President’s unwavering commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture,” the CAS noted.
