Nigeria has secured two silver medals at this year’s Pan African Mathematics Olympiad, held in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The country’s representatives, Elvis Chiedozie Ekwelem from Rivers State and Oghenerukevwe Patrick Esemitodje from Lagos State, brought home the honors in the annual continental mathematics competition.
The Olympiad, which gathered young mathematical minds from over 20 African nations, serves as a platform to promote academic excellence and foster research among the continent’s emerging scholars.

He highlighted the significance of the Olympiad in encouraging young African mathematicians to strive for excellence.
“This year’s Pan African Mathematics Olympiad saw participation from 20 countries, with an additional eight attending virtually,” Prof. Vilakazi noted.
“The outstanding performance of the Nigerian team is a testament to their deep understanding of mathematics and their commitment to excelling at the continental level.”
He expressed optimism about the future of mathematics in Africa, pointing to the dedication and eagerness displayed by the Nigerian students as indicators of their potential to contribute significantly to the development of the field in the years to come.
