Nigeria trash Sao Tome to wrap up AFCON qualification

Nigeria have sealed qualification to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast following a comprehensive 6-0 win over Sao Tome and Principe in their final qualifying match.

The Super Eagles had already guaranteed their place in the tournament, but they needed to win this match to top Group A and avoid being drawn against the top seeds in the group stage.

They made no mistake, scoring six goals without reply in a one-sided affair. Victor Osimhen opened the scoring with a header in the 13th minute, and Ademola Lookman added a second goal in the 27th minute.

Taiwo Awoniyi made it three-nil in the second half, and Osimhen completed his hat trick with two goals in the space of nine minutes. Samuel Chukwueze rounded off the scoring with a goal in the 86th minute.

The Eagles will now be looking to build on their recent form when the tournament kicks off in January.
