Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has announced that Nigeria is set to save N5.4 trillion in 2024 following the removal of fuel subsidies by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking at the 64th National Day celebration at the Cathedral Church of St. Peter in Abeokuta, the governor highlighted the economic importance of this move.
Governor Abiodun explained that the N5.4 trillion that would have been spent on subsidies could now be used to improve infrastructure and social services, stating, “The Federal Government, under President Tinubu’s leadership, has taken bold initiatives to reposition our economy and prevent bankruptcy.”
He added, “We must persevere and recognize that the removed subsidy would have consumed N5.4 trillion, which can now be invested in infrastructure and social services.”
Governor Abiodun urged Nigerians to engage constructively with the government instead of resorting to protests, which he warned could lead to looting and vandalism. He encouraged the people to remain resilient, pray, and persevere, assuring that the current administration is inclusive and working for the benefit of all citizens.
To help cushion the effects of the current economic challenges, Abiodun outlined several initiatives his government is implementing, including:
- CNG Buses: The state is deploying compressed natural gas buses to reduce transportation costs.
- Energy Transition Programs: The government has launched electric bikes (e-bikes) to promote alternative transportation methods.
- Reduced Workdays: Civil servants now work three days a week instead of five to ease financial burdens.
- Free Medical Services: The state is providing healthcare services for the poor and elderly.
The governor also announced plans to complete farmers’ markets across the state to sell food at affordable prices. Additionally, the Gateway Trading Company will begin operations soon, selling items at wholesale prices.
During the event, the Diocesan Bishop of Ijebu North Anglican Diocese, Rt. Rev’d Dr. Akinwande Godwin Odubena, emphasized the importance of leadership in shaping Nigeria’s future. He urged citizens to remain hopeful, unite, and avoid protests and violence, instead promoting dialogue for the country’s progress.
Bishop Odubena also called on leaders to recommit themselves to God and work toward the prosperity of the nation.
