Nigeria are through to the semi-finals of the ongoing Rio 2016 men’s soccer event.
A goal by captain Mikel Obi in the 15th minute and another by Aminu Umar in the 59th minute saw the Nigeria Dream Team VI beat Denmark by 2 goals to nothing.
Denmark started slowly, giving Mikel a chance to slot Imoh Ezekiel’s cross home to put coach Samson Siasia’s team in front in the first half. Nigeria continued to have the better of the possession, keeping the Europeans away from their half until Umar doubled the lead with an assist from Mikel in the second half.
This is the first time Nigeria will reach the semis since 2008. Nigeria will now Germany to see if they can get to the final and make a repeat of what happened in 1996 in Atlanta where they became the first African country to win the Olympic soccer gold medal.
