Nigeria and Spain have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance political consultations and deepen cooperation in key areas of mutual interest.

The agreement, signed on Tuesday by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, and his Spanish counterpart, José Manuel Albares, marks a significant step in advancing the Spain-Africa Strategy 2025-2028.

The Embassy of Spain in Abuja, in a joint statement issued by both ministers, described the MoU as a mechanism for regular dialogue aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.

“Today, in Madrid, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain, José Manuel Albares, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, held a working meeting aimed at further strengthening bilateral relations between both countries within the framework of the Spain-Africa Strategy 2025-2028,” the statement read.

With Nigeria being a dominant force in West Africa and Spain playing a crucial role in the European Union, the partnership is expected to foster economic growth, security cooperation, energy development, and climate action.

The ministers acknowledged the role of the Economic Community of West African States in maintaining stability in the Sahel and West Africa. They also exchanged views on pressing global issues, including the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.

“Nigeria is a strategic partner for Spain in West Africa, a region of special priority within the Spain-Africa Strategy. Likewise, Spain is a strategic partner for Nigeria and a key ally within the European Union, playing an active role in promoting stronger relations between the EU and the African continent,” the statement added.

The ministers reaffirmed their commitment to sustained collaboration across multiple sectors, pledging to work together to address regional and international challenges.

“Both ministers agreed that this visit represents a significant step in deepening relations between Spain and Nigeria. They reiterated their commitment to continuing close cooperation for the benefit of their peoples and the strengthening of Africa-Europe relations,” the statement concluded.
