American rapper Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr., popularly known as DDG, has dismissed what he described as false Western media narratives about Nigeria, saying the country is not as dangerous as the United States.

The hip-hop star, who is currently on holiday in Lagos, shared his views in a video that has since circulated online, encouraging foreigners to visit Nigeria and experience the country for themselves.

DDG said many of the warnings he received before travelling were misleading, insisting that Nigeria’s security situation does not compare to the level of violence seen in the US.

“I honestly think America is the most dangerous country,” he said. “I don’t think Nigeria is as dangerous as America — nowhere near.”

While acknowledging that Nigeria has its own security challenges, the rapper said gun violence and street gang activity were far more common in the United States.

“No doubt, there is insecurity in Nigeria. But gun violence and gangsterism is not common in Nigeria as in America. So, if anybody is thinking about coming to Nigeria, pull up,” he said.

DDG also spoke about misconceptions surrounding Nigerian food and living conditions, revealing that he had been warned against eating local meals and advised to boil water before drinking.

According to him, his experience has been completely different.

“I was told Nigerian food wasn’t healthy,” he said, adding that he found the meals nutritious and enjoyable.

He singled out jollof rice as one of his favourites, describing it as healthy and well prepared.

The rapper’s comments have sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians welcoming his remarks and praising him for speaking positively about the country while visiting.
