The National Economic Council meeting, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, has been informed of a significant reduction in new cases of the Type-2 Polio virus in Nigeria.
According to the Governor of Gombe State and Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, Inuwa Yahaya, the country recorded 42 cases as of August 2025, down from 78 cases in 2024.
The NEC meeting, held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, was attended by several state governors, including the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazak, and the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma.
Yahaya, who briefed State House Correspondents after the meeting, noted that while progress has been made, Sokoto State remains at high risk.
“Sokoto is at the back of the seat. So far, out of the 23 cases recorded in 2025, Sokoto has 13 cases, and so the committee has reported that and will discuss with the governor of Sokoto state with a view to strategising and see that they give effective coverage and ensure that routine immunization reaches all the people,” Yahaya said.
He added that Kano and Katsina states have recorded significant reductions in polio cases, with 85% and 84% decreases, respectively.
Gombe State, which recorded a case in 2024, has reported no cases this year.
