Nigeria needs lawmaker overhaul, says ex-residential candidate

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo, has called for a sweeping overhaul of Nigeria’s legislature, insisting that the country needs a complete reset of its lawmaking body ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an interview, Adebayo aligned himself with reform advocates championing the “FixNass” movement, arguing that the current National Assembly has failed to meet the expectations of Nigerians.

According to him, meaningful progress in governance would require replacing most, if not all, incumbent lawmakers. “Nigeria needs a new National Assembly with virtually no incumbent coming back,” he said.

Adebayo linked his call for legislative reform to broader governance challenges, including insecurity, poverty, and economic hardship. He stressed that without a responsive and effective legislature, efforts to address these issues would remain inadequate.

The former presidential candidate criticised the political class for what he described as a lack of ideological commitment, pointing to frequent defections among politicians as evidence of opportunism rather than genuine service to the people.

He also dismissed the significance of growing numbers within the ruling All Progressives Congress, arguing that political strength should not be measured by the number of elected officials but by the quality of governance delivered.

“What matters is whether Nigerians feel better about governance and leadership, not how many governors or senators a party controls,” he said.

While criticising both the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party, Adebayo described them as part of a “relay of inefficiency,” accusing them of failing to deliver meaningful reforms despite years in power.

He maintained that his party, the Social Democratic Party, remains focused on issue-based politics and is committed to addressing key national concerns such as security, job creation, healthcare, and education.

Adebayo emphasised that the 2027 elections present a crucial opportunity for Nigerians to demand accountability and reshape the country’s political direction, starting with electing a new set of lawmakers committed to effective governance.
