Nigeria has appointed its Ambassador and Permanent Representative to Austria and the International Atomic Energy Agency, Florence Ajimobi. She will serve as the country’s Governor on the IAEA Board of Governors for the 2026–2028 term.
According to TVC News, the appointment follows Nigeria’s election to the 35-member board. This happened during the 70th Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna, Austria.
Ajimobi disclosed the development on Saturday through a pictorial shared on her social media account.
Her new role will see her represent Nigeria during deliberations involving the agency’s programmes and activities.
Ajimobi to represent Nigeria at IAEA
Ajimobi is expected to participate in discussions covering nuclear safety and security, safeguards, international cooperation and the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology.
She will also present Nigeria’s positions at board meetings and participate in committees involved in shaping IAEA policies.
Nigeria’s election to the board is expected to deepen the country’s engagement with the agency. Furthermore, it will strengthen opportunities for international cooperation.
Nuclear technology promoted by the IAEA has applications in healthcare, agriculture, food security, water management and human-capacity development.
Ajimobi is also Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Austria and Permanent Representative to international organisations based in Vienna.
The appointment comes as Nigeria seeks partnerships aimed at expanding the safe and peaceful use of nuclear science and technology for national development.
