The Nigeria Immigration Service has apprehended 40 undocumented migrants in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State, intensifying efforts to curb illegal migration and enhance national security.

According to a statement on Tuesday by the Oyo State Comptroller of Immigration, Tayo Dada stated that the arrested individuals include 27 Cameroonians, 10 Beninese, two Ghanaians, and one Togolese. Among them are eight females and 32 males, all aged between 18 and 35.

Investigations revealed that 10 of the migrants claimed to be farmers, while the remaining 30 said they were involved in online marketing.

However, none of them possessed valid residence permits or travel documents, raising concerns about their entry into the country.

“Following credible intelligence, 40 illegal migrants were arrested at their hideouts in different locations within Akinyele LGA. Their profiling showed they all entered the country through unauthorised routes, and none could present any form of legal documentation,” the statement read.

The Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, has directed that the necessary procedures be followed to repatriate the foreigners to their respective countries.

This development comes amid a broader crackdown on irregular migration. Earlier in January, Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed that the Federal Government had deported 828 illegal migrants in 2024 as part of efforts to tighten border security and prevent threats to national stability.

With Nigeria’s borders facing increased migration challenges, the NIS continues to ramp up surveillance and enforcement operations, ensuring that only individuals with proper documentation reside and work in the country.
