Team Nigeria wrapped up its campaign at the 2026 CAA Africa Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, by clinching a fourth gold medal in the women’s 4x400m relay on Sunday evening.
The Nigerian quartet made up of Esther Okon, Toheebat Jimoh, Jacinta Lawrence and Patience Okon-George produced a winning time of 3:29.25 to secure the country’s fourth gold medal of the championships.
Nigeria controlled the race from the opening leg to the finish, with anchor runner Patience Okon-George delivering a commanding performance that left Ethiopia, which finished second, more than 30 metres behind at the line. Kenya claimed the bronze medal.
The men’s 4x400m relay, however, did not produce a similar outcome for Nigeria as Zimbabwe stormed to victory with a time of 3:01.08. Kenya and Morocco finished in second and third positions respectively, while the Nigerian team ended outside the medal places.
Earlier in the competition, Rosemary Chukwuma added another silver medal to her tally after finishing second in the women’s 200m event, having also secured silver in the 100m race.
Nigeria narrowly missed out on a medal in the javelin event as Adams Samuel Kure finished fourth.
The latest results once again highlighted the dominance of Nigeria’s female athletes, who have consistently accounted for the bulk of the country’s medals at major athletics competitions over the past two decades.
Tobi Amusan delivered Nigeria’s first gold medal in Accra after triumphing in the women’s 100m hurdles. Another gold came in the women’s 4x100m relay, where the team of Rosemary Nwankwo, Jennifer Obi Chukwuka, Rosemary Chukwuma and Miracle Ezechukwu secured victory.
Nigeria also struck gold in the mixed 4x400m relay through the combined efforts of Ezekiel Asuquo, Toheebat Jimoh, Victor Imeh and Patience Okon-George, who outclassed their rivals in the event. The women’s 4x400m relay triumph completed the country’s four-gold haul at Ghana 2026.
Although the team also picked up several silver and bronze medals, the men’s squad struggled to make a significant impact despite the impressive recent form of Samuel Ogazi, who recently broke Innocent Egbunike’s longstanding national 400m record that had stood for more than three decades.
Meanwhile, a top official of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria confirmed on Sunday night that Team Nigeria’s delegation would arrive back in the country on Monday evening.
