Niger tanker explosion death toll rises to 98

The death toll from Saturday’s tragic fuel tanker explosion in Niger State has climbed to 98, with 69 people injured and 20 shops destroyed, according to an update from the Niger State Emergency Management Agency on Monday.

The Federal Government confirmed that victims requiring critical care had been transferred to tertiary medical centers, following a directive by President Bola Tinubu for improved medical attention to the survivors.

The Director General of NSEMA,Abdullahi Baba-Arah, revealed that fatalities rose from the initial count of 86, with several injured victims succumbing to their injuries.

He stated, “More deaths have been recorded from the fire incident. The latest figure is now 98 deaths, 69 injured, and 20 shops burnt.”

At the General Hospital, Suleja, seven out of the 43 injured victims passed away, while three patients died at the General Hospital, Sabon-Wuse, where 23 others were admitted.

In a statement by the media aide to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Rabiu Ibrahim, it was disclosed that 20 injured victims were transferred to Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital in Abuja, and two others were taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Jabi for advanced treatment.

“The patients were accompanied by medical personnel and family members to ensure seamless care,” the statement noted, adding that the Niger State Government had expressed gratitude for the Federal Government’s prompt response.

Leaders across the northern region expressed grief and solidarity with the affected families and communities.

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, described the explosion as a national tragedy, stating, “This heartbreaking event is a grim reminder of the fragility of human life and the need for collective responsibility in ensuring safety.”

Similarly, Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, emphasized the importance of road safety measures, stating, “Every life lost in this horrific incident represents a family torn apart and communities left in mourning.”

The Arewa Consultative Forum also mourned the losses and urged the government to intensify public awareness on the dangers of rushing to collect inflammable substances during accidents.

“We are gravely saddened by the loss of lives, injuries, and property damage caused by the tanker explosion. We pray for divine succor for those affected and for a quick recovery from the impact of the incident,” the group said in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Tukur Muhammad-Baba.

The ACF and other stakeholders reiterated the need for stricter safety regulations and proactive measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. These include enforcing road safety laws and educating the public on the dangers of fuel-related accidents.

As investigations into the incident continue, the government has pledged to provide regular updates and ensure adequate support for survivors and affected families.
