A Magistrate Court in Minna, the capital of Niger State, has granted bail to 26-year-old Mohammed Abba Yahaya who was arraigned for causing serious harm to his ex-girlfriend, Hassana Sani, a 400-level student at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai.
The suspect, who lives in the Tungan Goro area of Chanchaga Local Government Area, was accused of attacking Hassana Sani last month.
According to police reports, he allegedly beat her and took her mobile phone, which is worth N210,000 (two hundred and ten thousand naira). He also caused serious injuries to her right eye.
The victim’s mother, Fatima Sani, a widow, reported the incident to the Chanchaga Police Division.
The case was then referred to the Police State Criminal Investigation Department in Minna for further investigation.
The police stated that the offence contravenes sections 2, 4, and 7 of the Penal Code Law of Nigeria.
During the first hearing, Mohammed Abba Yahaya pleaded guilty to the charges and was remanded in prison custody.
In the ruling on the bail application, the presiding magistrate, Hajiya Samira Wambai, granted bail to the suspect. She adjourned the case to the 15th of next month for a hearing.
