Yobe records 471 deaths within three weeks

The National Human Rights Commission has reported 265 cases of human rights violations in Yobe State between January and November 2024.

The NHRC State Coordinator in Yobe, Labaran Babbangida, revealed this during the commemoration of the 2024 International Human Rights Day in Damaturu, the state capital.

“This year, there is an increase in human rights violations in Yobe State. This happened due to the awareness raised among the public and their willingness to seek redress for rights violations,” Babbangida said.

He added, “Currently, we have about 265 recorded violations, which surpass the number from 2023. Factors such as the global economic meltdown and ongoing conflicts in the BAY states of Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe have contributed to these violations.”

In a related event, a Programme Officer for Community Mobilization at the United Nations Development Programme, Kalu Okey, read a speech by the United Nations Secretary-General, emphasizing how conflicts worldwide have worsened rights violations.

“Globally, conflicts contribute to violations, leading to national laws being ignored and civic space shrinking,” Okey stated.

He urged the government to protect the rights of the public and uphold justice for all.
