NHRC chairman: Omokri slams Buhari for appointing Northern Muslim

Buhari Omokri NHRC chairman Suleiman

Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday berated the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari for choosing to appoint Northern Muslims in sensitive positions.

This comes after Buhari appointed Salamatu Suleiman as the chairman of the National Human Rights Commission.

In a letter sent to the Senate, Suleiman, a former minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, is expected to head the 15-member board of the commission.

Reacting to the appointment via his verified Twitter handle on Thursday, Omokri congratulated Suleiman on her appointment.

He, however, questioned the president’s decision to snub non-Northern Muslims.

“I congratulate Salamatu Suleiman on being appointed by General @MBuhari as the chairman of the National Human Rights Commission. But I have a question: Will Buhari die if he does not appoint a Northern Muslim to all sensitive positions in Nigeria?” he queried.

The NHRC act provides for a governing council that shall be responsible for the discharge of the functions of the commission.

A law graduate of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Suleiman was appointed minister of Women Affairs and Social Development in December 2008 during the Yar’Adua administration.

In 2012, she was named commissioner in charge of political affairs, peace and security at the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) commission, a role she occupied until 2016. (The Cable)
