The Nigeria Football Federation has announced plans to introduce the Video Assistant Referee system to the Nigeria Premier Football League.
President of the NFF, Ibrahim Gusau, made the commitment during a retreat for NPFL management and personnel in Abuja.
Gusau stated that the NFF would initiate the process of implementing VAR in the domestic league by sending referees to observe and learn from countries that have already adopted the system.
“I can assure you that VAR will be effectively put into use in our domestic football before the end of my first tenure as president of the Nigeria Football Federation in 2026,” Gusau asserted. “It will be gradual, but we will surely get there.“
The implementation of VAR in the NPFL is expected to enhance the quality of officiating and minimize errors that could potentially impact match outcomes.
VAR, which was first introduced in the 2016 FIFA Club World Cup, utilizes video technology to assist referees in making correct decisions regarding crucial incidents such as penalties, red cards, and offside calls.
