Former President Olusegun Obasanjo was the hero of the day after he netted two goals in a novelty football match put in place to celebrate his 85th birthday on Friday.

The match, which attracted huge spectators, was played at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Dressed in a yellow jersey and short, the celebrant who was the captain of the OOPL team filed out against the Ogun State Government team led by the Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele.

Against the run of play, Obasanjo scored two of his team's four goals to defeat Team Ogun, which could only manage two goals.

Speaking to newsmen after the match, the octogenarian appreciated God for full fitness in spite of his age.

The former President also advised Nigerians, especially the elders, to inculcate what he tagged DREMS – Diet, Rest, Exercise, Medical examination and Social interactions.

These, he said were the secrets behind his agility and fitness, even as an octogenarian.

On her part, Ogun State Deputy Governor said, “As part of the events commemorating the 85th Birthday of our Elder Statesman, His Excellency Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, I captained the Ogun 5-a-side team against the OOPL, one captained by Baba himself.

“It was a goal-fest with Baba scoring several goals himself.

“May Almighty preserve us all to celebrate with Baba again next year in good health.”
