Jonathan blames crime increase on substance abuse
Former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan, has blamed the increase in the crime rate in the country on the consumption of illicit substances.
Jonathan who was recently appointed as the Chancellor of Cavendish University Uganda made the disclosure during a courtesy call on him by the Chief Executive Officer of the Albino Foundation, Jake Epelle.
The PUNCH reported that the visit by the foundation’s management and partners was to appreciate him for paying the bills of persons with albinism to undergo surgery against cancer overseas.
However, the former president lamented that the constant news of killings, banditry, abduction, terrorism amongst other crimes ravaging the country’s security has left many Nigerians traumatized.
He also noted that mental health has become an issue that needs to be looked into by the health system of the country due to the negative impressions of crimes on Nigerians.
Jonathan also lamented the issue of cultism, stating that it has grown beyond the tertiary institutions and eaten into the primary schools.
He said, “Most of these crimes perpetrated are drug-induced because no sane Nigerian will just go and commit crime except he is high on something. Imagine starting your day with the news of killing in the morning, it leaves an impression on your mind. We need to also look into issues of mental health.
“Now, we have cults in primary and secondary schools; then, it was in tertiary institutions, but you now see children in these schools thinking of how to kill their mates. This is sad.”
