Agency Report

More than 20 people were arrested Tuesday morning by police in France, Spain and Italy in an investigation into a possible doping ring in horse racing and trotting, a police source said.

The 21 suspects in custody in France included vets, pharmacists and trainers while two people were arrested in Italy and Spain.

Among those arrested are renowned trainers Yannick Alain Briand, Junior Guelpa and David Cottin, according to the same source.

“The objective of the operation was to attack the entire network,” said the police source.

“This is the first case of this magnitude in France,” said the source, adding about 40 races were being treated as suspicious.

The suspects could face charges of trafficking in doping products and fraud, because of their profits from winning races.

Approximately 80 police officers took part in raids in Brittany, Normandy and the southwest and southeast of France.

Banned products were seized during the raids.
