June 12: Lalong pardons seven Plateau inmates
Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong has pardoned seven ‘reformed’ inmates in different correctional centres across the state.
Lalong said the gesture was in the spirit of the Democracy Day celebration.
He added that five prisoners on death row had their sentences commuted to life imprisonment while two others got absolute pardon.
“On Prerogative Of Mercy, I have granted various categories of pardon to seven (7) Prisoners for their good conduct.
“All these pardons are granted for reasons of good conduct with effect from the different dates of sentences,” he explained.
The Nation reports the pardoned inmates are: Nanfa Gwantur (Death sentence commuted to life imprisonment); Timkur Laven (Death sentence commuted to life imprisonment); Ponzing Nanshe (Death sentence commuted to life imprisonment);
Dauda Joshua (Death sentence commuted to life imprisonment) and Wasa Zachariah (Death Sentence commuted to life imprisonment).
Davou Dalyop Mancha and Cletus Augustine got absolute pardon. The release took immediate effect.
