German cardinals accused of misconduct in sexual abuse probe

The current archbishop of Munich and Freising and two of his predecessors have been accused of misconduct in a new report investigating sexual abuse claims in the German Catholic Church.

The incumbent Cardinal, Reinhard Marx, who declined an invitation to attend Thursday’s presentation of the report, wax accused of misconduct in relation to two suspected cases of sexual abuse.

This related to reports made to the congregation for the doctrine of the faith in Rome.

According to the law firm, Westpfahl Spilker Wastl prepared the report on behalf of the archdiocese of Munich and Freising.

In its report, the firm also accused former archbishop of Munich and Freising, Friedrich Wetter of misconduct on 21 counts and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.

This served in the role from 1977 to 1982, of misconduct on four counts.
