JUST IN: MKO Abiola's 1993 opponent Bashir Tofa dies at 74
A former presidential candidate of the defunct National Republican Convention, Alhaji Bashir Othman Tofa is dead.
The Kano born politician passed away at the age of 74 after a brief illness early on Monday.
Tofa rivalled late MKO Abiola’s major in the controversial June 12, 1993, presidential election, annulled by the military government of General Ibrahim Babangida.
According to Daily Trust, One of Tofa’s daughters confirmed his demise on Monday morning.
The unnamed daughter was said to have debunked the rumours of his death when it trended on social media three days ago,
One of the deceased’s relations, Alhaji Muhammad, also confirmed his death.
Muhammad was quoted by DailyPost as saying that “Alhaji Bashir Tofa died after being admitted in hospital for some time.”
