President Bola Tinubu has said the four new tax reform bills he signed into law on Thursday are aimed at giving relief to poor Nigerians, supporting small businesses, and driving real economic growth.
Speaking through his official X handle, the president said the new laws will fix the country’s broken tax system, which he described as “complex, unfair, and heavy on the poor.”
“These reforms go beyond streamlining tax codes,” Tinubu wrote. “They deliver the first major, pro-people tax cuts in a generation, targeted relief for low-income earners, small businesses, and families working hard to make ends meet.”
The four new laws include the Nigeria Tax Bill (Fair Taxation), Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, and Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill.
According to Tinubu, the new laws will unite Nigeria’s many tax rules into one simple system, cut unnecessary government delays, and improve how taxes are collected across the country.
“For too long, our tax system has been a patchwork—complex, inequitable, and burdensome. It has weighed down the vulnerable and shielded inefficiency. That era ends today,” he said.
The president said the reforms are part of a larger plan to rebuild trust between the government and the people. He said a fair and simple tax system can make the economy stronger and more just.
“We are laying the foundation for a tax regime that is fair, transparent, and fit for a modern, ambitious Nigeria. A tax regime that rewards enterprise, protects the vulnerable, and mobilises revenue without punishing productivity,” he added.
Tinubu also said the new tax rules would improve investor confidence and make Nigeria a better place for business and innovation.
“We are also building a framework for the Nigeria of tomorrow—leaner, fairer, and laser-focused on unlocking opportunities for all,” he noted.
He thanked the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform Committee for their hard work, praised the National Assembly for their review of the bills, and showed appreciation to state governments for their support.
To the people of Nigeria, Tinubu said, “Thank you for keeping faith with this vision of reform.”
He ended his message with a call to action: “Simplify. Reform. Grow. Let the world know that Nigeria is open for business, and this time, everyone has a fair shot.”
