Netflix confirmed on Friday that its hit animated movie KPop Demon Hunters will return with a sequel, bringing back the pop trio whose supernatural storyline helped the film become the streaming platform’s most-watched title ever.
The announcement was made through Netflix’s Tudum platform, where filmmakers Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans revealed that a follow-up to the global blockbuster is currently in development.
The animated feature, which premiered in June 2025, rapidly climbed to the top of Netflix’s viewership charts, surpassing 500 million views worldwide and setting a new record as the streamer’s most-watched title of all time.
KPop Demon Hunters centres on HUNTR/X, a K-pop trio that secretly uses its music to defend humanity from monsters emerging from the underworld. The film blends pop music with supernatural fantasy and elements drawn from Korean folklore.
Kang, who was born in Seoul and raised in Canada, said the film’s success reflects the growing global appreciation for Korean storytelling.
“I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters,” she said in the Netflix announcement.
“There’s so much more to this world we have built, and I’m excited to show you,” she added. “This is only the beginning.”
The film’s soundtrack and original songs also played a key role in its global popularity, helping the project expand beyond animation audiences and dominate international music charts.
The lead single, “Golden,” became one of the year’s most successful songs, reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and spending a record 20 weeks at the top of the publication’s global chart.
KPop Demon Hunters is currently nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song at Sunday’s Academy Awards, marking a high point in an awards season that has already delivered several major honours and nominations.
Last month, “Golden,” performed by artists EJAE, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami, won a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media. The movie and its soundtrack have also earned awards at the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globe Awards.
Netflix did not disclose a release date for the sequel but said additional information about the project will be announced later. The upcoming sequel will also mark the first project under Netflix’s exclusive multi-year animation partnership with Kang and Appelhans.
