NERC set to sanction seven DisCos

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has scheduled a public hearing on October 24 to discuss the frequent collapses of the national power grid.

The hearing will take place at NERC’s Hearing Room, located on the Fourth Floor, Plot 1387, Cadastral Zone, Central Business District, Abuja.

NERC made this announcement through its official Twitter handle, inviting stakeholders, including Civil Society Organisations and the general public, to participate.

The hearing is being organized in response to the increasing incidents of grid failures that have led to widespread power outages across many states. NERC expressed concern over these issues, which have affected the progress made in reducing infrastructure challenges and improving grid stability.

“The commission has noted with concern the recent escalating incidences of grid disturbances often leading to marked outages in several states,” NERC stated. It emphasized its responsibility under the Electricity Act 2023 (Amended), which mandates public hearings on important issues related to Nigeria’s electricity supply industry.

This year alone, the national grid has collapsed seven times, with the most recent collapses occurring within days of each other. On Monday, the grid collapsed, leaving many states without power until it was restored on Tuesday.

The upcoming public hearing is expected to address these recurring challenges and explore potential solutions to improve the country’s electricity infrastructure.
