The National Examinations Council has decided to indefinitely postpone its 2024 Staff Promotion Examination. Initially scheduled for the 14th and 15th of February 2024 in Minna, Niger State, the examination faced criticism and resistance from NECO staff.

The Acting Director of the Directorate of Information and Digital Communication, Azeez Sani, issued a statement on Saturday confirming the postponement.

The decision aligns with the directive from the Committee on Basic Examination Bodies of the House of Representatives.

Sani stated, “The Committee has also scheduled a meeting with the Registrar/CE of NECO, Prof. Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi for Monday, 19th February 2024. With this development, all NECO Staff who are due for promotion this year should note that the exercise has been put on hold indefinitely.”

The initial decision to conduct the promotion examination had faced criticism from NECO staff members who raised concerns about their safety and the challenges posed by the ongoing insecurity across the country.

In response to the concerns raised by staff, the House of Representatives mandated the Committees on Education Examination Board and Basic Education to engage with NECO regarding the planned 2024 Promotion Examination.

The focus was on the potential risks associated with gathering about 1,500 staff in Minna, Niger State, against the backdrop of the prevailing security and economic hardships in the country.
