NDLEA seizes UK-bound drugs hidden in car parts, clothes

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has seized a large amount of cocaine and other drugs in a recent nationwide operation.

A statement by the Director, Media & Advocacy, Femi Babafemi on Sunday, said the drugs were hidden in automobile parts and clothing.

On Monday, August 5, 2024, NDLEA officers intercepted 2.32 kilograms of cocaine concealed in Ghanaian kente cloth at a courier firm in Lagos.

The drugs were destined for the United Kingdom. On the same day, 10.494 kilograms of cocaine hidden in heavy-duty automobile pivot shafts, also heading to the United States, were recovered by NDLEA sniffer dogs.

This brings the total weight of cocaine seized in these shipments to 12.814 kilograms. The NDLEA also intercepted five other consignments on Friday, August 9, 2024, at the same courier firm. These included 517 grams of cocaine in clothing materials, various quantities of pentazocine injection, promethazine injection, cocodamol pills, and 297 pills of tramadol 225mg, all heading to the UK and Canada.

In another operation, NDLEA operatives discovered 21 parcels of Loud, a synthetic cannabis strain weighing 10 kilograms, coming from the US and meant for delivery in Abuja.

On Wednesday, August 7, 2024, NDLEA arrested a suspect in Alafia Orile, Lagos, with 9 kilograms of cocaine intended for Onitsha, Anambra State. Two more members of a cocaine syndicate were arrested in Nnewi and Oba, Anambra State, on Thursday, August 8. They were caught with 2.865 kilograms and 1.748 kilograms of cocaine, respectively.

At the Tincan seaport in Lagos, 532 parcels of Loud, weighing 265.25 kilograms, were seized on August 7. This was followed by the seizure of 75 more parcels, weighing 37.5 kilograms, from another container on August 8.

In Adamawa State, NDLEA operatives recovered 425 blocks of cannabis sativa weighing 291.2 kilograms from a suspect’s Toyota Camry on August 8. The suspect claimed he was transporting the drugs from Edo State to Yola, Adamawa State.

Additional seizures included 1,169 kilograms of cannabis in Lagos and 1,230 kilograms of cannabis destroyed on a farm in Kogi State. The farm owner has been arrested.

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Marwa (Rtd), praised the officers for their efforts and urged them to continue their work in combating drug supply and demand. He also emphasized the importance of ongoing sensitization activities against drug abuse across the country.
