Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Kano State have recovered 112 kilograms of cannabis sativa following a road traffic accident involving a Volkswagen Golf and a truck along the Zaria-Kano Road, near Gadar Tamburawa.
According to a statement issued by the agency’s spokesperson, ASN Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, the incident occurred last Saturday during a routine patrol when officers heard a loud crash and rushed to the scene to assist.
Upon arrival, NDLEA officers provided first aid and immediately began rescue operations.
“After removing the windshield and a window to extricate the driver, they forced open the other door to remove the passenger, who immediately attempted to flee but was apprehended,” Maigatari stated.
A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 150 blocks and three sacks of loose cannabis, concealed inside the car.
The passenger, upon interrogation, allegedly confessed to being a representative of the consignor, admitting that he had made similar deliveries in the past.
The driver, meanwhile, admitted to using a one-way route to evade NDLEA checkpoints upon entering Kano.
The NDLEA confirmed that two offences are being investigated: reckless driving and drug trafficking.
While the driver of the Volkswagen Golf is currently receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained in the accident, the truck driver was reported to have suffered a fracture.
Maigatari noted that investigations into the incident are still ongoing.
