NDLEA finds AK-47 in Maize sack, seizes drugs in five states

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested a 29-year-old man, Ismail Isah, with an AK-47 rifle and two magazines hidden inside a sack of maize.

This was revealed in a statement on Sunday, May 18, by the NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi.

According to Babafemi, the arrest happened on Friday, May 16, during a patrol by NDLEA officers along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway.

“The suspect will be handed over to the appropriate security agency for further investigation,” Babafemi stated.

In another operation in Taraba State, NDLEA officers arrested a 22-year-old suspect, Shafiu Ismail, with 5,350 pills of tramadol and diazepam. He was caught on Thursday, May 15, at Sabon-layin in Jalingo Local Government Area.

Also on Thursday, NDLEA operatives in Jigawa arrested a 35-year-old man, Tijjani Mohammed, with 198kg of skunk at Malamawa.

In Niger State, a Toyota Carina with plate number AGL 945 BK was stopped along the Mokwa-Jebba Road. Inside the car, officers found 316 blocks of skunk weighing 143kg. A 35-year-old man named Idris Kamal was arrested.

On the same day, at Chachi Junction on Kaduna Road, NDLEA officers arrested a 26-year-old man, Emmanuel Hassan, with 14.3kg of Loud (a strong type of cannabis). A follow-up operation later led to the arrest of the real owner, Bello Aliyu, also known as Liti, aged 39.

In Nasarawa State, NDLEA officers caught a 60-year-old man, Welman Kengbo, with 594.8kg of skunk at Karu on Friday, May 16.

In Lagos, along the Lekki/Epe Expressway, a suspect named Oyenuga Toheeb was caught with 67.5kg of the same drug on Thursday, May 15.

Meanwhile, the NDLEA continued its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) programme across Nigeria during the past week. The campaign included awareness talks for students and teachers in several schools across Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Osun, and Rivers states.

Some of the schools visited were Supreme International School in Fagge, Kano; Al-Arifeen International Academy in Kaduna; Nadado Primary School in Bakori, Katsina; Ila Orangun Grammar School in Osun; and Government Secondary School in Onne, Rivers State.
