The Kaduna State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested 1,290 suspects and seized 4,589.361 kilograms of illicit drugs in 2024.

This was disclosed by the NDLEA Commander in the state, Samaila Danmalam, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Kaduna.

Danmalam explained that the arrests and seizures were part of intensified efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking. “We adopted a kinetic approach, involving multiple operations and raids, which led to the arrest of drug traffickers, users, and others aiding drug-related crimes,” he said.

The seized drugs included cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamine, tramadol, rohypnol, and other psychotropic substances. In addition, 2,023 rounds of ammunition, an English pistol, and a locally made pistol were also recovered during operations.

Danmalam highlighted financial successes, including the seizure of counterfeit ₦1,000 notes worth ₦4.8 million, and the dismantling of 124 illicit drug joints across the state.

He noted that prosecution efforts led to 189 suspects being taken to court, with 155 convictions secured. Sentences ranged from two to 15 years.

To address the root causes of drug abuse, Danmalam said the command conducted awareness campaigns, lectures, counseling, and rehabilitation programs to reintegrate drug users into society.

He expressed gratitude to stakeholders for their support. “We thank the Kaduna State Government, traditional rulers, community heads, civil society organizations, the media, and security agencies for their cooperation. We urge the public to provide timely and useful information to help achieve a drug-free Kaduna State.”

The NDLEA’s activities in Kaduna align with its nationwide War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign, which focuses on public education about the dangers of drug abuse.

The NDLEA continues its operations in other parts of the country, including the interception of nearly two tons of cannabis and the arrest of six foreign nationals at Eleko Beach in Lagos last week. In Edo State, operatives arrested a suspect in possession of 32,490 tramadol pills, 936 bottles of codeine syrup, and various opioids.

Danmalam reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to creating a safer and drug-free society, saying, “The drug war cannot be won by enforcement alone. Public support and education remain vital.”
