The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) in Nasawara State on Friday began skills acquisition training for no fewer than 750 unemployed youths in the state.

Alhaji Dauda Idris-Wase, NDE Coordinator in Nasarawa State, said at an orientation course for the youths in Lafia that the essence was to make them self-reliant.

He said that the programme tagged,

“Basic National Open Apprenticeship Scheme (B-NOAS)” would enable the youths to contribute their quota to nation-building.

Idris-Wase said the orientation course was to educate the trainees on the essence of the B-NOAS scheme and the opportunities available in it.

“We give this training package to equip the youths to become self-employed, gain economic freedom, build confidence and get value re-orientation,” he said.

The coordinator also said that the youths who were chosen from the 13 local government areas of the state, would complete their training in December.

He said that the three-month skills acquisition programme would provide training for the beneficiaries in areas such as catering, tailoring, fashion design and interior decoration.

Other areas are: plumbing and pipefitting, computer operation and maintenance, hairdressing, vulcanizing, hair cuts and satellite dish installation.

He urged the beneficiaries to be committed to the programme in order to justify government’s investment in the exercise.

“Government investments such as this should no longer be efforts in futility, we must take this programme seriously,” Idris-Wase said.

He urged other government agencies, private and non-governmental organisations to support the activities of the directorate in the interest of the society.

In his speech, the Chairman of the occasion, Alhaji Ahmed Suleiman-Wambai, who is also a former North Central Vice Chairman, All Progressives Congress, urged the beneficiaries to take advantage of the training to acquire knowledge that would support them in life.

Suleiman commended the Federal Government for its commitment in investing in the future of the unemployed youths, saying, “this training is an investment into the future of many families”.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Safiya Abdullahi described the programme as capable of turning their fortunes around.

Abdullahi pledged the commitment of the beneficiaries to be loyal and focused on the programme to justify government’s investments in it.
