The Niger Delta Development Commission has started repairing the failed sections of the Owerri-Port Harcourt Road between Umuapu and Umuagwo in Imo State.

The Managing Director of NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, inspected the ongoing work alongside other officials on Tuesday. He stated that the bad condition of the road required urgent action to make it motorable.

In a statement issued by NDDC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Seledi Thompson-Wakama, Ogbuku explained that the repair followed a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Following a presidential directive to urgently restore the dilapidated sections of regional roads, the NDDC has quickly mobilised construction companies to carry out remedial works to ensure that the people do not suffer unnecessary hardship while travelling,” Ogbuku said.

He added that the Federal Government’s quick response to public complaints about the road showed its commitment to easing the suffering of people in the Niger Delta region.

Ogbuku expressed confidence in the quality of the repair work and assured commuters that the restored road would last.

“As an interventionist agency, we will continue to complement the efforts of both the Federal and State Governments by taking measures to ease the stress commuters face daily,” he said.

He also praised the construction firm for its efficiency and urged residents and commuters to cooperate during the construction process.

One of the commercial bus drivers, Kingsley Okorigwe, expressed gratitude to the NDDC for responding quickly.

He said, “We have suffered a lot on this road. It’s good to see the NDDC doing something about it. This will reduce the stress we face every day.”
