NCS denies inmate deaths amid hunger allegations
The Niger State Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service has strongly refuted these claims in response to recent reports suggesting the deaths of eight inmates due to hunger or under-feeding within its facilities,
In a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, CSC Rabiu Mohammed Shuaibu, in Minna, it was emphatically stated: “There was no single death recorded in any of its facilities as a result of underfeeding.” Shuaibu condemned the circulating reports as “totally false, ill-motivated and aimed at causing panic in society.”
He further emphasized the integrity of the feeding regimen, asserting, “The feeding ratio of inmates has never been compromised in the correctional facilities.” Despite economic challenges and rising food prices, the commitment to ensuring adequate nutrition for inmates remains steadfast.
Expressing gratitude for the support received, Shuaibu acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the federal and state governments, as well as other stakeholders, in enhancing inmate welfare. “The Nigeria Correctional Service appreciates the commitment of the federal and state governments, the Chief Judge of Niger State, Justice Halima Ibrahim Abdulmalik, and the wife of the state governor, Hajiya Fatima Umar Mohammed Bago, towards providing enhanced welfare for inmates,” he said.
Regarding water supply, Shuaibu clarified, “The correctional facilities have functional water tankers that supply adequate water daily to inmates.” He debunked claims that inmates were compelled to seek water outside the facility premises, emphasizing that such assertions were fabricated and baseless.
In conclusion, Shuaibu urged journalists to exercise diligence in verifying information before dissemination.
He emphasized the importance of responsible reporting in fostering accurate representation and maintaining societal harmony. “Journalists are urged to verify their claim before rushing to the press,” he stated, “imploring them to always join hands with the service to ensure peace and security in the country.”
