The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has warned international airlines against deporting Nigerian passengers after flying them halfway to their destinations.
The aviation regulator described this practice as “unacceptable”, saying it has caused distress to passengers and affected the reputation of Nigeria’s aviation industry.
The warning was issued on Thursday by NCAA’s Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, Michael Achimugu.
“These actions, which involve the refusal of boarding or denial of entry at transit points due to visa and travel restrictions, are completely unacceptable,” Achimugu stated.
He emphasized that airlines must inform passengers of any possible travel restrictions before departure, not when they have already left Nigeria.
“Passengers should not be put in a position where they are denied entry or returned to Nigeria only upon arrival at transit stops,” he added.
The NCAA referred to Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations 2023 (Part 19.21.1.1), which requires airlines to inform travelers of any entry restrictions before selling tickets or allowing boarding.
“Airlines must take appropriate measures to screen passengers and provide accurate and up-to-date travel information regarding their visa and entry requirements,” Achimugu said.
To stop this trend, the NCAA has announced immediate enforcement measures.
“Effective immediately, any airline found engaging in such practices will face regulatory action, including fines, suspension of flights, or other penalties,” Achimugu warned.
He urged airlines to comply with the regulations to maintain professionalism in the aviation industry and protect Nigerian travelers.
