The Nigerian Bar Association Ado-Ekiti Branch has started a special ‘Lawyers Market’ where staple foodstuffs and other items are sold at 50 percent discounts to its members.
The market, held on Saturday from 8 am to 10 am at the Afe Babalola Bar Centre within the Ekiti State High Court premises in Ado-Ekiti, saw a large turnout of lawyers taking advantage of the discounts.
Items available included garri, rice, beans, vegetable oil, spaghetti, Semovita, and more. For example, a measure of garri worth N1,200 was sold for N500, while a measure of rice worth N3,000 was sold for N1,500. A litre of vegetable oil, usually N2,400, was sold for N1,200.
Other items were also discounted significantly:
– Beans worth N3,000 were sold for N1,500.
– 1KG of Semovita worth N2,000 was sold for N1,000.
– A crate of eggs worth N2,500 was sold for N1,250.
– Spaghetti was sold for N500 per pack.
The market was organized by the association’s welfare secretary, Mrs. Khadeejah Adeniyi, and the social secretary, Emmanuella Akinyemi, with Uzoma Aremu-Adetayo, the financial secretary, managing payments.
NBA Ado-Ekiti Branch Chairman, Bar. Taiwo Omidoyin, explained that the initiative was designed to ease the impact of rising living costs on members. “The leadership of the Branch is not unaware of the current hardship in the country and how it affects everyone, including our members. It was based on this we conceived this initiative to help mitigate the harsh economic situation on our members in our little way,” Omidoyin said.
He added, “While we may not be able to do so much at the moment, the branch bought food items from the markets and sold them to financial members at a subsidized price of 50% of public market rates. That is, items sold for N10,000 in the public market would be sold at N5,000 in the Lawyers’ Food Market.”
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Bolanle Scholastica Ojo, praised the initiative. “The 50% discounts on food items will help cushion the effects of the economic hardship. I arrived at 8:15 am and was able to buy rice, beans, garri, and spaghetti,” Ojo said.
