The Nigerian Navy has rescued nine passengers, including eight police officers and one civilian, after a boat accident near the Agbura community in Bayelsa State.

The mishap occurred when a speedboat carrying the officers capsized after hitting a submerged wreck while heading to Yenagoa. The impact threw the passengers overboard, prompting a swift response from the Navy.

Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, Director of Naval Information, said in a statement on Tuesday that the Navy not only rescued the victims but also recovered three rifles belonging to the police officers during the operation.

“The Navy personnel acted promptly, rescuing the victims and administering first aid to the injured. They were later transferred to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa for further medical attention,” Commodore Adams-Aliu stated.

To prevent future incidents, the submerged wreck responsible for the accident was identified and marked by the Navy. The recovered rifles have been secured and documented, pending formal handover to the Bayelsa State Police Command.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, commended the quick and professional actions of the rescue team.

“This operation demonstrates the Navy’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property within Nigeria’s waterways. We remain dedicated to collaborating with other security agencies to enhance national security,” Vice Admiral Ogalla said.
