The Defence Headquarters has said that a naval rating, LS Akila, who opened fire on troops of operation Fansan Yamma, killing one personnel, will face a court-martial.

In a statement on Saturday, Edward Buba, director of defense media operations, said the administrative procedure for notifying the deceased’s family had been activated.

“On October 25, 2024, at about 0312hrs, a Naval personnel, LS Akila A, deployed at FOB Dansadua for Operation FANSAN YAMMA, in questionable circumstances, opened fire sporadically, killing a military colleague,” Buba said.

He added that Akila was arrested, disarmed, and detained, and an investigation is underway.

“After investigation, the case will be escalated to a standing court martial set up to address such misconduct among troops,” he added.

Another naval rating, Abdurasheed Mohammed, was also paraded on August 28 by the FCT police command for allegedly killing the son of Ishaya Ibrahim, former chief of naval staff, in Maitama district in Abuja.

Former commissioner of police, Benneth Igweh, said Mohammed was arrested during a routine stop-and-search operation on August 18 and found him driving a black Prado SUV.

Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, Naval spokesperson, said the proper procedure for both military and civil judicial processes will be followed to establish the facts of the case and to ascertain guilt as determined by a competent court.
